Sedan 2001 har Mac OS X levererat fler än tusen innovativa nya funktioner. Med Snow Leopard, nästa större version av världens mest avancerade operativsystem, ändrar Mac OS X mer än fläckarna på pälsen, det byter fokus. Nu är huvudsyftet inte att lägga till nya funktioner i Snow Leopard — som planeras vara klart för leverans om ungefär ett år — utan att bygga vidare på de otroliga innovationerna i Leopard. Det sker genom en ny generation kärnprogramtekniker som strömlinjeformar Mac OS X, förbättrar dess prestanda och höjer kvalitetsribban. Snow Leopard krymper storleken ordentligt på Mac OS X, gör det ännu effektivare för användare och frigör värdefullt hårddiskutrymme för saker som musik och bilder.

Microsoft Exchange-stöd

Snow Leopard innehåller ett fixat och färdigt stöd för Microsoft Exchange 2007 inbyggt i Mail, Adressbok och iCal. Mac OS X använder protokollet Exchange Web Services som ger tillgång till Exchange Server 2007. Eftersom Exchange stöds på din Mac och iPhone kommer du att kunna använda dem var som helst med full tillgång till e-post, kontakter och kalender.

64 bitar

För att bättre kunna hantera de enorma mängder minne som ingår i avancerad maskinvara utökar Snow Leopard 64-bitarstekniken i Mac OS X så att den stöder banbrytande mängder RAM-minne – upp till teoretiska 16 TB, eller 500 gånger mer än vad som är möjligt idag. Mer RAM-minne gör att program går snabbare eftersom fler instruktioner kan rymmas i det snabba RAM-minnet istället för på den betydligt långsammare hårddisken.

Flera kärnor

”Grand Central” är en ny uppsättning tekniker inbyggda i Snow Leopard som ger Mac OS X ett oöverträffat stöd för flerkärniga datorer. Det är fler kärnor istället för snabbare klockhastigheter som ger prestandaökningarna i dagens processorer. Grand Central drar full nytta av detta genom att anpassa hela Mac OS X för flera kärnor och optimera det för att tilldela bearbetningar till flera kärnor och processorer. Grand Central underlättar även för utvecklare att skapa program som verkligen utnyttjar kraften hos flerkärniga datorer.

Medier och Internet

Snow Leopard drar nytta av medietekniker som först använts i OS X iPhone och introducerar QuickTime X, en strömlinjeformad plattform för nästa generation som driver utvecklingen framåt för moderna medie- och Internetstandarder. QuickTime X har optimerat stöd för moderna kodekar och effektivare medieuppspelning, vilket gör det perfekt för alla program som behöver kunna spela upp medieinnehåll.

Eftersom Snow Leopard ger den snabbaste tillämpningen hittills av JavaScript blir webbprogram effektivare. Safari kör JavaScript upp till 53 procent snabbare med Snow Leopard.*

OpenCL

En annan kraftfull teknik i Snow Leopard, OpenCL (Open Compute Library), gör det möjligt för utvecklare att effektivt utnyttja de oerhörda mängder gigaflop av beräkningskraft som idag är låsta i grafikprocessorn. Eftersom grafikprocessorer idag närmar sig beräkningshastigheter på en biljon beräkningar per sekund klarar de en hel del mer än att rita upp bilder. OpenCL tar den kraften och dirigerar om den så att den kan användas i den allmänna datoranvändningen.

Windows 7 next version of Windows

Windows 7 is the next version of the Windows client operating system. This version incorporates hundreds of improvements based on your feedback. It works the way you want: it's responsive, reliable, and runs smoothly. It starts and shuts down faster, and is designed to make your battery last longer. Plus, it's really easy to connect to things you care about—from people to printers. You'll also be able to do everyday things faster, from getting around the desktop and managing open windows, to finding files and programs, and using the web. We hope you love it, because it's got your fingerprints all over it.
This is a very important question. The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1, 2009 and the RC will expire on July 1, 2010. To avoid interruption, you'll need to rebuild your test machine using a valid version of Windows before the software expires. Windows will notify you that the expiration process is beginning, and two weeks later your PC will begin shutting down every two hours.
The RC is free and will be available at least through July 2009. However, because Microsoft isn't providing technical support for the the RC, we strongly recommend that only experienced computer users sign up. How experienced? At minimum, you should be comfortable backing up a computer, formatting a hard drive, burning an ISO file to DVD, and installing an operating system from scratch. You should also be comfortable troubleshooting problems on your own.
You help just by using it. That's because the Windows 7 RC automatically reports crashes and bugs to Microsoft over the Internet. The information sent in automatic reporting is called "telemetry." Our engineers updated Windows 7 based on Beta test results. During the Release Candidate phase, they use the telemetry data to verify that the fixes and changes they made are working correctly.
